Piva Monastery: history and visiting guide
Piva Monastery is one of the most important cultural sites in this part of Montenegro. The Church of the Dormition was built in the 16th century and, centuries later, transferred to higher ground to preserve it during the construction of the hydroelectric project and the creation of Piva Lake.

A church with an extraordinary story
The monastery church is associated with Metropolitan Savatije Sokolović and the period from 1573 to 1586. Its interior was painted and furnished over the following decades, helping the monastery become an important spiritual, artistic and manuscript center in Piva.
Moved stone by stone
When the original site was threatened by the hydroelectric project, the building was dismantled, documented and reconstructed on higher ground. One of the most demanding tasks was preserving and reinstalling approximately 1,260 square meters of wall paintings.
The relocation took years and is now a central part of Piva's history: a meeting of cultural heritage, major engineering and an exceptional effort to preserve an artistic whole.
What to look for
Beyond the frescoes, take time to notice the carved and gilded iconostasis, old books and objects held by the monastery treasury. The visit is most rewarding when approached slowly and respectfully, as this is a living religious place rather than only a tourist attraction.
Planning the visit
The monastery combines naturally with a day in Plužine and at Piva Lake. Confirm visiting arrangements before departure, particularly around religious services and feast days.
