Ethno Village Montenegro in Brezna: Where Tradition Is More Than Decoration

Some places capture our attention with a beautiful view, while others remain in our memory because of the feelings they awaken in us. Ethno Village Montenegro in Donja Brezna belongs to the latter.

Located approximately 34 kilometres from Nikšić and 26 kilometres from Plužine, it is far enough from the bustle of the city for you to quickly forget about it. Instead of traffic and noise, the rhythm of the day is shaped by fresh mountain air, the scent of wood, spacious meadows, and meals valued not for how quickly they are prepared, but for the ingredients and care that go into them.

Although its name may suggest just another tourist resort, the story of Ethno Village Montenegro is far more personal. It was created on a family estate out of a desire to preserve a way of life that had existed in this region long before rural tourism became popular.

A Family Story Transformed into a Memorable Experience

Ethno Village Montenegro opened on 20 May 2006 as the first ethno village in Montenegro. It was founded by the Blagojević family, whose history has been connected to this region for centuries.

According to the hosts, the estate on which the village now stands was purchased by their great-grandfather more than a century ago. A particularly meaningful part of this family history is the old maple tree planted by their grandfather Miladin when he was a boy. Family members once rested in its shade after working in the fields; today, the same tree offers shelter to guests arriving from around the world.

It is in details such as these that the true character of the Ethno Village can be found. Tradition was not added later to make the property more visually appealing. It is the foundation on which the entire story was built.

The complex covers approximately 80,000 square metres, yet despite its size, it does not feel like a conventional tourist resort. Stone houses, wooden cabins, greenery, and open spaces blend naturally into the landscape of Brezna rather than competing with their surroundings.

Accommodation That Preserves the Spirit of Traditional Mountain Homes

The different types of traditionally designed accommodation are an important part of the experience. Guests can choose from stone cottages, log cabins, apartments, and traditional houses.

The stone cottages were built using wood and stone, inspired by the traditional homes once found throughout this region. Behind their rustic appearance, however, they provide everything needed for a comfortable stay, including private bathrooms. Fireplaces add a special warmth, particularly on colder evenings, when the gentle crackle of the fire becomes part of the atmosphere.

The property also features a restored stone house dating from 1932, as well as a traditional house with a wood-fired sauna. Here, luxury takes on a different meaning. It is not found in polished surfaces or meticulously styled interiors, but in privacy, silence, the warmth of a fire, and the opportunity to step away from the usual pace of everyday life.

Traditional Cuisine as One of the Main Reasons to Visit

A stay in Brezna would be difficult to imagine without a traditional Montenegrin meal. The recipes used at the Ethno Village have been preserved within the family and passed down from one generation to the next.

The menu includes dishes characteristic of northern Montenegro and the Piva region, such as *kačamak*, *cicvara*, homemade pies, fresh dairy products, traditionally prepared bread, and lamb or veal slow-cooked beneath a *sač*.

These are hearty, uncomplicated dishes born in a region where people traditionally lived from the land and livestock. Their flavour does not depend on elaborate presentation, but on quality ingredients, trusted recipes, and the time required to prepare everything properly.

The restaurant is therefore much more than an additional amenity for overnight guests. For many visitors, sharing lunch or dinner becomes the most memorable part of their stay—a moment when the day slows down, phones are set aside, and conversations last longer than expected.

A Place for Couples, Families, and Nature Lovers

Ethno Village Montenegro appeals to many different types of travellers. Couples can find privacy and peace, families have plenty of space to enjoy the outdoors, and mountain and adventure enthusiasts can use the village as a convenient base for exploring nearby lakes, canyons, and hiking trails.

It will be most appreciated by those who are not looking for a standardised hotel experience. Brezna offers something different: a rustic setting, genuine interaction with the hosts, traditional food, and nature that has not been reshaped merely to create a tourist attraction.

There is no need to fill every hour with planned activities. Sometimes it is enough to enjoy a morning coffee outside your cottage, walk around the estate, have a leisurely lunch, and allow the rest of the day to unfold on its own.

Worth Staying for More Than a Day

Ethno Village Montenegro can also be visited as a day trip, particularly for its restaurant and traditional surroundings. However, the true character of the place is best experienced after the daytime visitors have left and Brezna falls quiet.

What remains is the fresh mountain air, the soft light glowing from the stone cottages, and a kind of silence that is almost impossible to find in the city.

For this reason, Ethno Village Montenegro is more than somewhere to spend the night between two excursions. It can become the centrepiece of a journey—a place to discover the flavours, stories, and landscapes of one of Montenegro’s most beautiful yet still relatively unexplored regions.

If you need a break from the pace of everyday life, Brezna does not offer a spectacle created simply for photographs. It offers something far simpler and more valuable: a few days in which you can once again hear the sounds of nature, the conversation around the table, and your own thoughts.
